The reason why there is no record of Nicholas in England after the 1851 census is simply that he caught "gold fever" and went to Victoria.
That's the reason why Harriet is on the 1861 census, with her children, living next door to her husband's parents Nicholas and Jane Stevens in 13 Polkinhorne Lane, Gwinear.
He travelled to Victoria on the ship the "Royal Charter", arriving in 1856. He was a tin and copperminer so the process of digging for gold would not have been too foreign to him. I don't really know the details of his life in Australia, but I do know that he married Louisa Evans after his wife Harriet died in 1864, so he must have had some word from home.
I have been trawling through the records on Ancestry, trying to find the shipping details for Nicholas' arrival in Vic., William and his family's arrival in Qld. and any details for Louisa Evans.
He was under Nicholas MADLAN, on the Unassisted Passenger Lists to Vic.1852-1923, arriving from Liverpool into Melb. on the 9 Dec.1856, on the ship the "Royal Charter" as Maree had said. Port B,Fiche 116,page 007. (www.prov.vic.gov.au/indexes.index_search_results.asp ) He appeared to be travelling by himself; there were no other "Madlans" with him.
As a background to this voyage, his 2 younger brothers Charles, 26, and Edward 20, (he appears as "Rd" on the record, but he went by the name of "Tom.") had travelled over the previous year to Vic., arriving in March 1855 on the ship the "Lightning." (Port B,Fiche 089,page 002.) He would have been very envious of their going over and has gone over also, when he got the chance.
His son William, whom you mentioned, later decided to travel to Australia to find his father. He emigrated to Queensland with his wife Elizabeth Webb, and baby daughter Elizabeth, on the "Countess Russell', arriving on 30th July, 1873. Sadly, baby Elizabeth died on the voyage.
He died from typhoid, apparently, in 1884, the same year as his wife. I'm wondering if his wife also died from typhoid?? Worth checking out, probably. Sadly, also for William, he died without finding his father.
The other thing that I found out was that Elizabeth Webb, William's wife, died in 1884, not from Typhoid as I suspected, but more likely from complications following childbirth. Their daughter Caroline was born on 6 Jan.1884 and died shortly after on 13 Feb.1884. Elizabeth died on 10 Jan.1884. Also, I have not found their arrival details as yet, but I'm still looking! - Margot Middlin 3 Jan 2011
