Dock Labourer's Fatal Injuries
A verdict in accordance with the medical evidence that the deceased died from haemorrhage and laceration of the brain following a fracture of the base of the skull was returned by Acting Coroner J McCabe solr today at an inquest held in the South Infirmary Cork on William Gough 118 Kilbarry Place Spangle Hill dock labourer who was fatally injured on November 6th last.
Timothy Ahern a dock labourer said he was hatch foreman aboard the ss William Byrd which was discharging maize at the south jetties on November 6th. Six men including the deceased were removing the hatches preparatory to beginning unloading operations He saw the deceased fall through the hatch which was partly opened into the hold. Deceased struck his head against an iron tank in the bottom of the hold. Just as he fell the deceased made an unsuccessful attemp to grasp the side of the hatch to save himself. A couple of fellow workmen vent down into the hold and brought up the deceased in one of the unloading buckets while witness rushed to summon a priest and the ambulance. Deceased had eighteen years experience of that kind of work.
Christopher O Mahony another dock labourer corroborated and said he and another man went into the hold after the accident placed the deceased in a bucket and had him brought to the quayside.
Garda A Kehoe Old Blackrock Road said the deceased fell 37 feet. In the bottom of the hold were I on ballast tanks and three feet above the one into which the deceased fell was an iron ledge against which the deceased struck his head.
Dr R O Neill who performed a post mortem examination said the deceased had a wound across his forehead and down his face as far as his chin numerous abrasions on the forehead and face and an extensive fracture of the base of the skull is well as laceration of the brain. His wrist was also fractured. The cause of death was haemorrhage and laceration of the brain following fracture of the base of the skull.
