    • 1939 England Wales Register
Education Was Educated At An Orphanage
MILI At the age of 13-15 he ran away from the orphanage and went and joined the British army (He was born in 1880 in Corsham Wiltshire). He managed to fool them into thinking he was old enough as he was over six feet tall and well built., he became a career soldier and stayed in it most of his life.

I have a WW1 medals from for a William Clothier who served in the Royal Munster Fusiliers.

    Lived in Windsor England

I don't know the date my dad enlisted. I know his regiment was the Royal Munster Fusiliers and that he was stationed in Duncannon Co Wexford there he met and married my mother/ He served in South Africa campaign before he married my mum. I have his medals one has King Edward VIIth's head on it and one has Queen Victoria on. The Victorian one has two bars on saying Orange Free State Cape Colony while the Edwardian one has two bars on saying South Africa 1901 and 1902

My sister Peg was born in 1902 in Ireland and mum and Peg stayed with my Grandmother (Another relative I never met) while my Dad went off to India to the North West Frontier I don't know any dates, but have a medal saying North West Frontier 1908. Mum and Peg followed later where except for Peg, Bill and Me, all the rest fo the family were born. Bill was born in Ireland and I was born in Windsor. I have no idea how long they were in India, but I suppose they lived with my grandmother on their return and all during the 1914-1918 war. Bill might be able to help there.

After the end of the war I think Dad got a job as a civilian working for the Army in Kent. I think the barracks was at Shorncliffe, I don't know how long they were there, again Bill might remember. I hadn't appeared then. Eventually they arrived at Windsor still working for the Army, where I was born in 1926. He became redundant with all the others in 1929, (no redundancy pay in those days), and had to find somewhere for us to live, as accommodation went with the job. He managed to buy a house in Windsor, because his eyes had suffered from the war he was in receipt of a small disability pension, and although he tried hard enough he never got another job until 1940, when he found a job as a night watchman until the end of the war so that helped a lot.

William appears to have been baptised twice once in Corsham England as a Protestant and later on his return to Cork Ireland as a Catholic.

Was put into orphanage by his mom on their return to Cork after Henry's death. At the age of 13-15 he ran away from the orphanage and went and joined the British army. He managed to fool them into thinking he was old enough as he was over six feet tall and well built.
The family in Cork never saw him until many many years later.

Ted said my Grandmother lived in India for 11 years when Grandpa was in the Army. Some of the children were born in India. My Mother was the eldest and has always talked about living in India. She had to help with the children and went to school there. Also picked up some of the language. Maybe that is where you came to a blank after Grandfather left Ireland. - Helena Kent 12 Jan 2005

During his travels he met Paddy Hartnett who happened to know the Clothiers (Lizzie & Mary) from Patricks Arch, Paddy's Mom was a Nora Hor(i)gan too but not our one. During the conversation it sparked William's interest in his family and he later visited them there.

(Paddy Hartnett is listed in the 31 Mar 1901 census as living at 8 St Patricks Arch with his Father Patrick 37, Labourer Egg Packer and Mother Nora 40, Fowl Plucker. He is aged 15 and a Labourer Egg Packer).

William was later stationed in Collins Barracks. He had a good friend Jock Green, from Belfast who served in the Navy.

Later in life after his retirement he moved to Windsor England. Where he died, he was old when he died.

Gran (Hannah Felton), Mom (Eily Mulcahy) and all of us went to to visit his (William Clothier's) address as his wife (Lena Venn) was still living there, but even though it appears that she may have been in she did not answer the door, (Gran could see the curtains moving and someone peering out from behind them), this would have been in the late 60's.

A neighbour said that her daughter looks after her.
