Death of sport Rob: Buckle
By WILLIE COTTER
THE death of Bob Buckle, one of Cork's finest all-round sportsmen, took place at Heatherside Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was in his 85th year.
-Bob played hurling and gaelic football for St. Paul's school in his native Belfast, but it was as a soccer player that he hit the headlines in Cork.
His father Harry, an Irish international while with Sunderland and Bristol City in the early years of the century, eventually ended his career with Fordsons, and was the father figure of the team that won the Free State Cup (nowadays the FAI Cup), in 1926.
Bob travelled down to Dublin to see the game, continued on south for the victory celebrations and settled in Cork. He played in local soccer with Rockmount, winning a Munster Minor Cup medal, and in 1934 figured on the Cork team that emulated Fordsons feat in winning the Free State Cup - the first father-son winners
In little over a year however, he was playing gaelic for St. Nicholas and hurling for Glen Rovers through his connections with the Creedons, a well-known bakery family in Shandon Street. He was on the first St. Nicks team to win the Co. Senior Championship in 1938 and regain the title two years later. He was also in the Glen squad during their record-making years in the 30's.
Bob was also an outstanding tennis player with Altona and was a founder member of their pitch and putt club. He was also an exemplary member of the 15th South Parish Troop of the Catholic Boy Scouts.
A fitter at Dunlops for most of his life, he is survived by his wife Eileen, sister of Cork All-Ireland goalkeeper Dave Creedon; sons Roy, David and Alan; daughters Mary (wife of duo star Dave Barry and better known as "Bubbles" ), Elaine and Patricia.
Removal takes place from O'Connors Funeral Home, Temple Hill to St. Michael's Church, Blackrock this evening at 6.45pm. Requiem Mass at 12.00 noon tomorrow, Funeral afterwards to Crosshaven, described by Eileen as his pet love.
