- Was killed in an accident. he was a hurler and may have been killed in a car accident, fell off the back of a van or ute, on the way to a hurling game.
Mary Healy had lost about 8 or nine children and in those days they did not have incubators or anything, so she was after losing 8 or 9 kids. She had only one, surviving, child and his name was Pat Healy and he was killed at 32 years of age in 19 July 1970. He played hurling with Cork Minor and Senior and he is the only man, as far as I can gather up to today, who played Minor and Senior hurling in the Munster final in the one day. He Captained the Cork Minors in 1956 and he was bought in at half time and he came into the Seniors after half time and he played right corner forward next to Christy Ring who played full forward. He had Captained the Minor team and they lost to Tipperary and the Cork Senior trainer, I think he was called Barry, came over to Pat who was sitting on the grass, said get up your going in there and they put him in. They beat Tipperary by a point in the Seniors 1956 and Tipp were favourites to win They lost the Minors to Tipp and Cork were favourites to win. Myself and Pat Healy and Mary Doll were bought up as brothers and sisters, my father was the Blacker, Mary's Father was the Whiter and Pat Healys father was Johnnie Healy. So if I say I was talking to my sister may I have to specify which one. Hughie Falvey 9 Apr 2006
Pat had gone to a Hurling game by train down the country. He watched the game and was about to get the train back, when some of his friends said to him to come back in the van with them and they would have a good crack in the van on the way home.
They had seats in the back of the van and it was one of those vans with the sliding side door, as they went around the corner the sliding door opened, and he fell out. Now he was quite a hefty lad. But on the side of the road they used to leave the gravel and grit for the snow in winter and there was a mound of this on the side of the road and as it was July it was dry and compressed. So as he fell, I mean his shoulder would normally have taken the impact, but when he fell out he hit his head on this mound of gravel and died probably instantly, definitely by the time they got him to the hospital. He still had his return ticket in his pocket, he was a marvellous Hurler. He played for Cork and in America.
My cousins were all coming back in cars talking about seeing an accident on the road on the way back and little did they know it was our Pat.
My poor Mom was devastated, he was only 32 years old. I remember getting a telegram the next day and I managed to fly home that night. and where supposed to be coming over to me in England the following week. Mary Doll Falvey 18 Apr 2006
