The Evening Echo - Cork - Monday 29 May 1978
CLIFFORD (Cork ) -On May 27, 1978 at the North Infirmary, John Clifford, beloved son of the late Michael and Annie Clifford 9 Coal Quay, and dear father of Frank, Kenneth, Michael and Pauline. Very deeply regretted by his loving family, brothers sisters, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends, Requiescat in pace. Reposing at O'Connor Bros. Funeral Home, North Gate Bridge. Removal on this (Monday ) evening at 8 o'clock to SS. Peter and Paul's Church. Requiem Mass at 1C a.m. on tomorrow (Tuesday) Funeral immediately afterwards to St. Joseph's Cemetery Mallow.
He had been married and think he had several children I don't know who he married but many years ago I met up with one of his sons, Frank about 1965 at that time he was living in Dagenham.
Johnny and his wife were separated or divorced by then.
I believe Kim Clifford and family are in contact with Frank, you'd have to check.
He lived in Church St. London NW8 for many years with a new partner called Lily they had a son together named Michael. I know he moved to Cork not sure of date, but that is where he became ill and died there.
I believe he served in the British army at one point.
My mother told me that one time many years ago when I was very young she was in dire financial straits and was behind with her rent he had just left the army and paid her arrears with his army pay!
He had many different jobs through the years, he drove for a greengrocer and would arrive at ours with an enormous box of apples for us.
Another job as a driver for hairdressing supplies, we were inundated with shampoo etc. I have very fond memories of him, a heart of gold and a very funny man.
Think Lily was a nickname and I think was from Cork. She was known as Lily Li.
Michael had 2 daughters Rachel and Gemma! Their mother is Yvonne Neville. The Michael I remember was an incorrigible rogue! Maria Banks 12 Nov 2021
