My Dad (Thomas Falvey 1928-1995) used to visit his two Uncles, James' sons, in Douglas as they used to give him a couple of pence per visit. His story of these visits told to me when I was a boy, came to mind towards the end of my research and I had a look at Falvey's in Douglas and there was only one family there. Within a couple of hours I managed to trace them back to Blarney Street on the North Side of the City and to establish and confirm the link between their branch James born 17 Oct 1829 and my branch his Brother of Denis born 21 May 1826 both children of John Falvey born 15 Oct 1778 and Mary Ahern. What I did find particularly interesting was the accuracy of the story and the amount of it that could be corroborated as my father seemed to have an allergy to telling the truth. Dad said he used to visit 2 Uncles in Douglas, he was born in 1928 so would have had to have been 8+ before he would have started to head over there alone, I presume he would have gone alone as that way he wouldn't have to share the pennies with anyone else), that would have been about 1932 on. Margaret Falvey was working in the Mill and accounts from people that new the family say that Tom worked as a Head Mason and the others did not really work much at all. Denny did a little cooking and Timmy never really worked. So conceivably when Dad went over their the only two likely to be at home were Denny and Timmy. - Matt Falvey Jan 2010.
Hi Matt,
I just got some information for you but not much.
Frank Downey aged 80 next birthday still lives in Douglas West and is wheelchair bound.
He knew Tim and Tom Falvey and Maggie Falvey, a weaver, possibly a sister.
Mrs O'Brien- Maggie Halloran lived next door to Frank it may have been
no 7 or 12 (The numbers of the houses have changes). She was a great neighbour.
The Falvey's were her uncles and she looked after them in their old age.
Maggie's son was John O'Brien.
Maggie went to live in Grange Park. She died and her husband Paddy died.
Pat McSweeney is the caretaker of the graveyard nest to St' Columba's Church and he can be contacted at Marian Terrace ( no number given) Grange Road. some books relating to the graveyard are still in existence.
Not much there . I've take some photos and I'll try and attach the to the email. I having a bit of trouble sending them.
Thankfully I was not effected by the floods but at the moment we are in the grip of a freeze and it's hard to get about.
All the best for now and have a Happy New Year,
Olive Coleman
