- Looking at the 1924 Pax Manifest for Honora Under the Question, "Whether ever before in the United States: and if so, when and where?" she has indicated on it, "Yes", she was had previously been in the US and, "Year or Period of Years" she indicated "1880-1890", "Where" in "Portland". The interesting thing is the date 1880 coincides with death of her father James (13 Apr 1879), Honora was just short of 11, you can imagine the family using the time to look for new horizons, so in 1880 they might have determined to head over to the US, I can't find a family move or a move for just Honora on her own, though if she didn't go with her Mom and family, she would surely have gone with a cousin or friend at least and then stayed with and family member over there. Can't find anything to confirm it. Matt Falvey 28 Jan 2010.
Email John O'Halloran 3 Feb 2010-....First yes, Noran Falvey was in Portland Oregon in the late 1800's with one of her sisters. Don't know much about what they did or how long they stayed. I remember some kind of note book that my father had that had some details re her Oregon stay, but have no idea where it may be now.
Following John's confirmation, I checked to she if I could find any mention of either Honora travelling there with Mary or Margaret. Mary being the most likely as she was 5 years older than Honora, whereas Margaret was 2 and that so it would seem more likely. that Honora travelled with a 17-18 y.o.. The only Honora Pax movements are one with A mother and siblings which aren't her on the Winsconsin in 1881 and another 1887 on the Arabic with a brother called John and her brother John died when he was 2. So we have two lines of proof that she was there, the 1924 Pax Manifest and John's recollection from the Book that his father had. I have entered the Emmigration and Immigration events as per the 1924 Pax Man on Honora's card and will keep a look out as more records come to light to see if I can find them in Portland - Matt Falvey 3 Feb 2010.

The Holton House, (later the Belvedere), at Fourth and Alder, was a hotel in one of the few cast-iron buildings as far west as Fourth Street. When it was built in 1885, the neighbourhood was largely residential but was changing rapidly as downtown moved inland. Prior to the opening of Union Station in 1896, the hotel was the arrival and departure point for Southern Pacific's steam passenger trains on the West Side line to Beaverton, Hillsboro, McMinnville and Corvallis via a right of way down the centre of Fourth Street.

New Grand Central Hotel. When completed in 1892, by beer mogul Henry Weinhard, The New Grand Central Hotel on the Corner of 3rd and Flanders street, was ideally situated for arrivals from Portland's still under construction Grand Central Passenger Station (Union Station was more of a descriptive term than a proper name at the time) and the steamship docks on the Willmette River. The area was a gateway to Portland for traveler's, where City and Suburban Railway streetcars descended from the original Steel Bridge into the evolving hotel district to continue on Third street.
The five story building was designed by architect Henry Hefty in the prevailing Romanesque revival style. It featured a decorative tower and all the modern accoutrements of the day.
"The New Grand Central contains 142 handsomely furnished rooms, a well furnished office, an attractive dining room, bar and barbers shop, electric lights and elevator. Artesian water and steam heat are supplied throughout the house." -The Oregonian's Handbook of the Pacific Northwest, published in 1894.

The Portland Hotel opened in 1890. It had eight floors. 326 bedrooms, and extensive dining facilities, and the design suggested substance and elegance rather than opulence and frivolity. In a sense, it reflected something of Portland's conservative (some said dull) character. All told, the hotel had cost well over a million dollars and taken years to complete. Railroad magnate Henry Villard began construction of the Portland Hotel, however, his finances collapsed and progress halted for over two years. When George B Markle Jr. came to Portland he decided to begin a campaign to raise enough local money and support to complete the hotel. He succeeded in getting acquainted with the "right" sort in Portland and generated interest and capital from notables such as Henry W Corbett and William S Ladd. Over 150 Portlanders subscribed to Markle's plan, and construction of the hotel resumed. Until it was torn down in 1951, the Portland Hotel stood between Southwest Morrison and Yamhill, on Sixth Ave, facing the Pioneer Courthouse.
