- Aunty Babe (she was called Babe Doll by my father when she was born, and was never known by any other name from then on!) may have been born in the same house as my father, 27 Grattan Street in Cork. If not, they would have moved to the Rope Walk by then, where my father's early years were and where he grew up. This is a lane behind St Vincent's Church in Sundays Well.
The Callanan Family moved from the Rope Walk to 9 Gurranabraher Avenue (a corporation house) about 70 years ago when the houses there were newly built. Granddad Callanan and his three sons, Mark, Josie and Mossie were builders and plasterers who worked on these houses. There is a photo of them somewhere on the roof of one as it was being built. The family at that time consisted of the parents and the 4 youngest, all the older ones had by then moved out except for Aunty Babe who was still with the family there. They lived there for about 7 years before moving the 1 The North Mall.
The house in Gurranabraher was taken over by my father (Josie), who, 63 years ago, moved in with my mother and my eldest sister Marion, and eldest brother Patsy. My brothers and sisters and I were raised in Gurranabraher Avenue and we still have the house there. In fact I am going there for Christmas! The house had two stone rabbits guarding the front passage - but no lions I am afraid. Though Uncle Markie did bring Flame the lion there (Mark was my Godfather).
