- I can't find a birth for Michael anywhere. I am of the opinion that he may have been adopted, But I have no proof, which in the case of adoptions is normal.
Francis and Hannah who were both just under 20 at the time of their marriage in Apr 1881, had been married over 12 years before Michael was born. This is very unusual for two factors:
1. they married in April which generally would indicate they had to, but there was no subsequent birth, and
2. I could not find any evidence of him serving in the Army which could account for an enforced separation of 12 years and and accommodate the need for an early marriage.
Up until that time, 1893, in fact in all the time of their marriage I cannot find a single birth or death of any child attributed to them. This seems to be confirmed on the 1911 census where they have indicated they had been married 19, years and had had 1 child born alive and that that child was still living.
Looking at the two census that are available at the moment the 1901 and 1911, which are located below, you can see that Francis and Hannah, maybe because of their lack of children seem to have become a repository for siblings, nephews and nieces. One of which Charles Holland's details are covered more full on Hannah's bio page (Hannah [Anne] Buckley) 1861-1946.
The other factor that make me doubt that Francis and Hannah are his parents is his name -Michael.
At this time most families used the normal Irish naming traditions, those being that the first born male son was named after the father's father - in this case John,
the second born male son was named after the mother's father in this case Denis, and;
the third born male son was named after the father - in this case Francis.
Michael is not named after any of them.
In fact the name Michael had not appeared in the family before and it was only after he entered the family that the name Michael entered the family. Using the Irish naming traditions in 2 out of the three instances I have been able to document.
If someone in Cork could access St Finbarr's the South Chapels birth/baptism records for the period when Michael was baptised i.e. c1893 it may contain information that may shed more light on the situation. (The could have been living at Bachelor's Quay or possibly Fort St at the time).
