- Dear Matty, It was good to speak with you on the phone on a subject which we both share. My apologies for not being in touch with you sooner, but I have been busy trying to pin down where my Grand-Father Jeremiah Desmond was born and also who his parents were. I even spent a day at the National Library in Dublin seeking information.
The Jeremiah who was born on 8 January 1869 is the most obvious one. He was born in Kilcondy in the parish of Kilmurry, near Macroom in Co. Cork. He had a sister Mary who was born on 5 February 1871 in Forest an adjoining townland of Kilcondy. Jeremiah died on May 30th 1940 and his sister Mary Hogan by marriage died on 12 December 1954. my grandfather Jeremiah was buried at St. Finbarr's Cemetery Cork and Mary is buried at the old Cemetery, Pembrooke, Passage West. A correction I wish to make concerns my grandfather Jeremiah Desmond's date and place of birth.
I have done some research and have discovered that he was born in Kilcondy,Kilmurry Parish, on 8/1 /1869.
His father died when he was young and he came to live with his aunt and uncle at 98 Clarence Street ( now Gerald Griffin St.)
The Roll Book at Blackpool National School for Boys shows that he was transferred from Canovee Boys School in 1877 when he was 8 years old. These sources confirm that he was born in 1869.
Over the next few days I shall get the information you require from my other brother and sister and hope to get some photographs as well for you.
