Statements at Cork Inquiry
HOUSING SCHEME
Hearing of Claims for Compensation
That from 1929 to 1932 in her shop at 22 Corbett's Lan, now demolished, she had a turnover in one brand of tobacco alone of ¹800 and atet the house had cost ¹320 to purchase in 1928, was stated by a claimant yesterday at the inquiry being held by J McAuley, Local Government Inspector, at the City Hall, Cork, to access compensation in connection with the Corporation's County Borough Housing Order, 1933, in the North-West Ward Housing Scheme.
The resolution declaring the area defined to be a clearance area was passed at a meeting of the Corporation, held on 31st Oct. 1933, and confirmed by the Minister for Local Government and Public Health on 8th March 1934.
The are affected includes Wolfe Tone St., Bailey's Lane, Kearney Avenue, Corbett's Lane, Trimbath's Lane, St Vincent's Avenue, Convent Place and Beecham's Lane.
The following counsel were engaged in the inquiry:- Messrs M O'Driscoll, P Sullivan D J Callanan.
The solicitors engaged were- Messrs B Galvin (for Cork Corporation), M O'Connor, H E Donegan, C K Murphy, W F O'Connor, J Morrissey, J W O'Donovan, and T A Buckley. Mr M Murphy, auctioneer, acted as valuer for the Corporation.
In the case of Mrs A Kenneally, 14 Old Market Place it was stated by Mr B Galvin that the site value of of for of her five houses, 1 and 2 Donovan's Lane and 16, 17 and 18 Donovan's Lane was ¹22 7s 6d and the clearance cost ¹89 9s 6d.
Mr G Byrne B E Housing Superintendent, Cork Corporation, said the the houses were all one storied and in a bad state of repair, being very old.
The Inspector said tat he had received a letter from Mrs Kenneally, who was unable to be present, but she had not specified what compensation she claimed.
In the claim of Mrs M Donnelly, 7 Cattle Market Avenue, in respect of two houses, 36 Corbett's Lane and 80 Wolfe Tone St., the claimant said the she bought the houses in 1929 and paid ¹100 for them. They were both in good condition.
Mr Galvin said the the Corporation's valuation for the two houses was ¹42 4s 6d.
Mr M O'Driscoll (instructed by Mr w F O'Connor) for the claimant.
Mr M O'Connor appeared for Mrs E O'Shea 4 Lower Montenotte in respect of two houses, 35 Corbett's Lane and 33 Corbett's Lane.
The claimant sad that she expended a good deal fo money on the dwelling 35 Corbett's Lane recently.
The Corporation's valuation for the two houses was ¹13 9s, and the clearance cost ¹21 6s 7.
Promised Compensation
In the claim of Mrs Falvey in reselect of the dwelling house and shop, 22 Corbetts Lane, the claimant mentioned that in 1928 the bough the house for ¹320. "I never gave anybody any trouble, but went out," said Mrs Falvey, "because I was promised compensation for the lose of my house and business." She added that the house had now been demolished.
The Inspector - I am sorry for that, because I would have like to have seen it.
In reply to Mr O'Driscoll (instructed by Mr W F O'Connor), who appeared for Mrs Falvey, said that from 1929 to 1932, her turnover in one brand of tobacco alone was ¹800.
Mr W L Kelleher, Civil Engineer, said that he valued the house at ¹179 and the sit at ¹8.
Mr Galvin said that the Corporation's site value was ¹5 4s 6d and the clearance cost ¹29 7s 1d.
Mrs Falvey said that there was no need for that, as her brother and nephew were unemployed at the time and wold have taken it down, but they did not get even that privilege.
Mr O'Driscoll said that they could only carry out the Act, but it seemed that an amending Act was badly needed to compensate people for the loss of their livelihood. This was a particularly hard case.
Mrs Falvey also told the Inspector that she had a family of nine children.
The inquiry adjourned until to-day
