Cork Examiner - Cork - Tuesday 31 July 1883
ALLEGED INFANTICIDE
Kanturk Monday
At Freemount, a village situate about six Irish miles from Kanturk, an inquest was held by Mr Coroner Byrne J.P., Wallstown Castle, Mallow, assisted by a respectable jury, on the body of a male infant which had been found dead on the 28th July. Sub-constable Patrick Murphy gave evidence and deposed the from information received he arrested a young woman named Bridget Cooch on the 27th inst., charged with having given birth to the child. He brought her to her house. She made no statement there but subsequently admitted having given birth to the child. He then put two men in charge of her to watch her movements. On the following day he went again to the house, and was there informed by Sub-constable Peter Daly that the woman Bridget Cooch had a short time previously gone into the garden at the rear of the house, carrying in her hand a bag. Witness, with Sub-Constable Daly, then went into the garden, and found the bag, in question which contained the body of the child. Doctors James Mackey, Kanturk, and W.P. O'Leary, Milford, made a post mortem examination of the remains, coming to the conclusion that death was caused by hemorrhrge.(sic) There was a slight discolouring of the neck, and when the body was found the lungs and cavity of the chest were filled with air, the lungs were a bright red and floated on the water. The jury returned an open verdict. - COR.
I have attached the newspaper cutting on Bridget Cooch. It doesn't paint Bridget in a very good light in my opinion. The death cert states that the child was born on the 18th Jul 1883, Sub -constable Murphy visited the house,( which is described as "her house"), on the 27th, then on the following day the 28th she concealed the corpse in a bag and put it in the garden.
Apart from admitting to having given birth to the child she made no statement concerning the birth, death or the associated circumstances. As the doctors testified in the inquest the baby was born alive and had taken breadth as the chest and lungs were filled with air. After having had six previous births, either solo or assisted, I personally find it very hard to not draw a sinister conclusion to her failure to correctly look after the umbilical cord.
The death cert has the cause of death as - Haemorrhage Through Inattention To Umbilical Cord, A Few Minutes. Certificate Received From James Byrne Coroner For The County Of Cork Inquest Held 30 July 1883
The fact she didn't testify on her behalf make it even more of unlikely she was looking after the best interests of the child.
This could also related to the complete absence of her husband William from any of the dialogue or records that we have access to. Particularly when women were normally described as "wife of labourer" or other such chattel like terms.
In the 1883 newspaper report she is living in her house and there is absolutely no reference to her being a widow or having a husband.
On the 1883 death cert, were we would normally have child of Farmer or such we have Child to Bridget Cooch Dressmaker.
On the 1886 birth cert, the Name of Father is Blank as is the Occupation
On the 1886 death cert, we have Child of Seamstress.
My guess is that William left or died around the 1879 birth of Richard. Bridget found herself pregnant and rather than have to face the inherent shame, resolved to get rid of the 1883 child, without notifying anyone, of course this failed miserably and the inquest would have made matters even worse for her and the poor family. Then she fell into the same trap again in 1886. This time it look like she tried to starve herself and thus when the baby was born and died of basically starvation, which wouldn't cause to much trouble at the subsequent inquest, but the lack of a father still had to be explained to the township. I suppose America then seemed the best option.
