What does this all mean? See below:
RN J49402 record sheet. >> Prefix J to service number = Seaman or Communications rating. <<
>> "Period of Engagements" or "Period of C. S. Engagements"; CS = Continuous Service <<
Under it is written 29 Aug 1917 - 12 years, then under that M-C-S 1 April 1919.
>> Joined the RN as a "Boy Seaman" [hence J prefix] at age 16yrs 6mths [max age to join as boy seaman], then he signed on for period of 12 yrs service at 18. <<
He was supposed to have served on Minesweepers, does M-C-S have some thing to do with Minesweeping?
>> Possible, but not as simple as M = Minesweeping. CS I take to be Continuous Service and it may be he gained a specialist/trade qualification that changed his Continuous Service Number prefix from J to M; M covered a number of "trades" as "Artisans and Miscellaneous" amongst others. <<
Further on down on the left there is a list of Ships he served on:
Impregnable, Temeraire, Caesar, Caesar (Pontypool), St George (Pontypool), Ennaja ?? (Pontypool), Caesar II (Pontypool), Julius (Pontypool) and VictoryI. Am I correct in believing that Impregnable was a docked training ship and that the others with the exception of Victory I were actual ships? Where any of the minesweepers? But what is the significance of (Pontypool)?
>> The list of ships are his postings, the heading on a Certificate of Service = Name of Ship. (Tenders to be inserted in brackets); so he served on HMS Pontypool for most of his service but the ship was moved about and was "tender" [attached to] to those named.
HMS Impregnable was indeed a "docked" [hulk] Training Ship for the RN's boy seaman and remained so until 1928 when it became a shore establishment. [Google "HMS Impregnable" for photos and more details]
HMS Temeraire was a Bellerophon Class Battleship she was part of the Grand Fleet when he served on her, he missed the battle of Jutland in 1916, but may have been with her in Oct 1918 when she was transferred to the Eastern Mediterranean Squadron.
References to Caesar have slight problems. There were 4 ships named Caesar, 1st 1793, broken in 1821; 2nd 1853, sold in 1870; 3rd 1896 sold 1921 [see below]; last was a C class destroyer built in 1944 and broken in 1967.
HMS Caesar was a Majestic Class Battleship served in the Black Sea during the Allied action during the Russian revolution. Listed as harbour depot ship in 1919. He later transferred to HMS Pontypool which was a tender [attached to] Caesar.
HMS Pontypool [originally named HMS Polperro] was "later type" of Hunt Class minesweeper [sometimes referred to Aberdare Class] of which there were 87 of type - there's the link to "family lore"- Many of this class were assigned to special service as tenders to various ships [submarine depot ships] or flotillas.
HMS St. George was an Edgar Class cruiser and in 1917 she was converted to a submarine depot ship and served in the Aegean 1918-1919 with the 2nd submarine flotilla.
Ennaja ?? No idea what this can be, nothing like it listed as a British Vessel in Jane's Fighting Ships of 1919 [online at http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Janes_1919/Index/Index.html ]
Caesar II I think the II must refer to a second posting to the Majestic Class Battleship.
HMS Julius - no information - sorry.
HMS Victory = Portsmouth Royal Naval Barracks now renamed HMS Nelson]. It was common for sailors to be posted short term to the Royal Naval Barracks - Not sure why reference to Victory and Victory 1, only other HMS Victory is Nelson's Flag Ship in No 2 Dry Dock Portsmouth Dockyard, she is still a commissioned ship in the RN >>
>> Note most ships will return hits [some with photos] from Google; insert ships name and prefix HMS in quotes. <<
My mother said that Matthew may have deserted from the RN.
The last entry above in full states:
Ship - Victory I, List - 15 c/11, No. - 8009, Rating - AB, Period of service from 17 Nov 19 - To 17 Mar? 20. If discharged whither and for what cause - Run.
>> List = muster list with details, he "served" as an Able Seaman from 17 Nov 1919 to 17 Mar 1920. Run = AWOL, which after a fixed period becomes desertion, therefore after 5mths was considered to be discharged by reason of desertion. <<
And below again is written:
an unreadable entry that end with 18 ??? 19 and then
Canada 27 Nov 19,
Victory 12 Dec 19,
Victory I 17 nov 19,
Absentee (Victory) 18/3/20 Absentee list 257,
Run (Victory) Absentee List 272,
Run 13 ??? Absentee List 31/2? Vic I,
>> believe Canada = HMS Canada she was in Davenport Dockyard for re-fit in 1919-1920, looks like he went awol after 17 Nov 1919 during transfer to her and was "reposted" back to Victory because of his no show, becoming "officially" absent on 18 Mar 1920 <<
Adjacent to this is:
Badges,
No Granted Deprived ?165 Canada
?165 Canada, ?160 Julius
30/34 Vict I,
>> The above "badges" relate to Good Conduct Badges, 1 badge [chevron] awarded for 4yrs Good Conduct to maximum of three badges [12yrs]. Badges attract additional pay and are "granted" for 4 yrs "undetected crime", and removed "deprived" if found guilty of misconduct etc. <<
Then adjacent to that is:
Run Victory 13.3.20, SC not ??? (Crossed out),
New SC 389 31,
"Victory" 26/3/20,
Copy SC Placed,
in Misc Bdle 2.6.20,
>> above relate to recording his desertion, although unable to give exact interpretation <<
If the references to "Absentee" and "Run" , (would "Doing a Runner" come from this term?) means that he did desert, that would confirm my mothers recollection, and would this put the occurrence at 17 Nov 1919 and is the Victory I another name for a land base that people are transferred to when they are not on a ship so as to free up positions on the respective ship?
Wouldn't, shouldn't the authorities have gone looking for him if he did desert?
>> I'm sure the origin of "doing a runner" will be recorded somewhere but most references I've found relate it to running off without paying a bill for meal, accommodation etc.
17 Nov 1919 was last day at Victory, looks like he 1st went absent from 18 Nov 1919 as stated above.
HMS Victory was both the name of a ship and Portsmouth RN Barracks as stated above, deserters would be transferred to one of the RN barracks to remove them from ships muster lists.
The authorities would issue his details to the police both in the locality from where he went AWOL and his home town and they would call at his home. He would also be listed in Police Gazette. >>
It appears from the above that he was earned at least three Medals: Canada (what would this be for?), British War and Victory Medals. This seems to be confirmed in the other document I have:
>> No, he didn't earn 3 medals, as explained above badges relate to good conduct badges and Canada, Julius and Vict 1 are ships names. <<
ADM 171/110 Roll of Naval War Medals 1914-1920, Volume 22, Contents - Ratings; RN Mat. - My. Has: pg 512 Roll R.N.
Mulcahy Matthew; A.B.; J49402; Medals &c. earned - V, B; How issued or disposed of - F; Remarks - R.
>> The medal roll confirms he was entitled to the Victory & British War medals, not three medals; the roll records what happened to them. In his case F = forfeit by reason of desertion R [run]. <<
I have written today to the Medals Section of the Ministry of Defence, to see if I can get them issued. Would the likelihood that he deserted affect his entitlement to them and also if it doesn't what are the chances of having medals issued so long after the event?
>> Any WWI medals that weren't claimed ceased to be issued some years ago. In your case there would have been none as explained above. <<
The located on the right in the column, Remarks are:
Paid War Gratuity
HMS Caesar List,
(Pontypool) 143,
(a symbol of a circle with a tick through it then) per Original (?ship?) Office.
Same symbol and Reverts to Naval Rates 7 March 1920.
I have just noticed that the above symbol is adjacent to the Rating column on the Ships Victory I column. Anyway what would this mean?
>> Don't know what symbol indicates, expect it was some clerical recording method. War Gratuity was fixed payment in lieu of pension, only those wounded or disabled recieved a pension for war service. Had he not deserted he would have recieved a pension on completion of his 12 yrs fixed period. Reverts to Naval Rates refers returning to ordinary pay due to his desertion, i.e. Still "war service" pay rates at time because of actions in Russia <<

When Matty had TB in 1929 he had to stop work at the Mill (in what was later the Sunbeam factory), his Mother in law Mary Clothier bought him a taxi, because he could work. He drove that for a while until he was force to quit as he was haemorrhaging from coughing and could not manage to drive it. So he then employed James Hornibrook to drive it and he said he could not make any money out of it so in the end they had to sell the taxi. Matty did not work any more after this. The day Matty died the Doctor, (who knew him well), visited him in his bedroom and said to him, "Matty you are in a lot of pain and are not going well, don't you think it is about time to go". Matty then called all of his children up and said goodbye to them, then he said goodbye to Hannah his wife. The Doctor went back into the bedroom and a sort time later Matty died. - Eily Mulcahy 2006
