JOHN MCNAMARA OBITUARY
14 June 1935 - 1 April 2015
John McNamara was born on June 14, 1935 in the Bronx, NY ("Just 6 blocks from Yankee Stadium!", forever branding him a die-hard Yankees' fan) to Patrick Francis McNamara (1900-1966) of Cork, Ireland and Theresa Markham (1893-1972) of Manchester, England.
John passed away on April 1, 2015 due to complications from a long battle with prostate cancer which he refused to let define him in any way.
After finishing high school in Elmont, NY , John served in the US Army in 1955-56 and was stationed in Bad Tlz, Germany. In 1959 John married Roxane Blumberg of Valley Stream, NY and had two sons. While spending the majority of his years in New York, he was also a free spirit who took to the road again and again. You could hardly name a place in the northern US or Western Canada that he hadn't been; always keeping himself to cold climates and spending time in Wyoming, Alaska, British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon before finally settling down at the age of 69.
He spent his last 10 years in Moorpark, CA to be with family. Anyone who lived on the west side of Moorpark, near the high school, would almost certainly have seen John walking the family Bernese Mountain Dogs: Kona & Bailey. His long, lanky, frame; his limping gait; his sometimes colorful and often sports-related attire; and one or both dogs could frequently be spotted walking around Countrywood, Mountain Trail, Arroyo Vista Park and all roads in between. He proudly walked the dogs for 2 hours a day, every day, for his last 10 years. Always a New Yorker at heart, he could also be seen dressed in a tie & jacket for any of his grandaughter's music performances at MHS.
The number of people who touched him on his walks is immeasurable. If you were one of those people he stopped and talked with, you were sure to hear plenty about his favorite sports teams: Yankees; Syracuse; Wisconsin Badgers & the LA Kings. The joy, comfort and beauty of those walks and the people he met, touched him deeply.
John is survived by his son Michael and grandson, Taza of Olympia, WA. And his son David John, daughter-in-law Patti, and grandchildren Kyle & Keiko McNamara of Moorpark, CA and his final soulmate, Marjorie Mackie of Vernon, British Columbia. David and his family want to thank each and every person who, along his walks, made Moorpark the one place where John could truly call home; the one place where he wanted to plant his roots and let them grow deeply.
