Bethel, Walter
Died on January 5, 2014 at the age of 88. Born June 11, 1925, Walter was born to Delia and Walter Senior, and was the loving brother to Ruth, Harold, and Mary. Walter began his life in the "Hell's Kitchen" section of New York City, and grew up in the South Bronx attending St. Luke's Grammar School, Monroe High School and Geneva High School in Geneva, New York.
Walter was a proud military veteran of World War II serving a member of the US Army Air Corps.
After being discharged from the US Army, Walter met and married Margaret (Rita) Felton and was a devoted and loving husband of 55 years until his beloved Rita's untimely passing in 2003.
Walter dedicated his life to law enforcement serving 20 years as member of the New York City Police Department, retiring as a sergeant. Upon his retirement, Walter moved himself and family to Scottsdale, AZ in 1973. Walter became a member of the Arizona Capitol Police, rising to the rank of Chief of the Capitol Police before retiring in January 1984.
Walter was an avid golfer and a sports fan, a passion he shared with his family. Walter was preceded in death by his wife Rita and his son Mark. Walter is survived by his sons Richard and his wife Sherrie, Robert and his wife Patti, Christopher and his wife LeAnn, and Mark's wife Stacey Bethel-Peterson. Walter is also survived by his grandchildren, Erin and her husband Rick, Matthew and his wife Jenet, Samuel, Sarah, Jon, Brian, Kylie, Sydney and John, and his great-grandchildren, Ide, Grady, Nolan, Adam, and Ella.
Walter was a gentleman, kind, generous, thoughtful, and authentic. He was a loving, devoted, husband, father, and friend.
Funeral mass will be held at St. Anne Catholic Church, 440 E. Elliot Rd. Gilbert, AZ 85234 on Tuesday, January 14 at 10:00 AM.
Interment will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85024 on Wednesday, January 15 at 10:30 AM.
Donations in Walter's name may be made to , 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix, AZ 85014.
