Nenagh Guardian - Saturday 20 June 1981

Before adjourning the general monthly meeting of Junior Chamber Roscrea recently, as a mark of respect to its deceased member Richard Fairbrother, the Chapter President John Lupton, paid the following tribute to his late friend and colleague:

"How can I describe in words that numbing feeling of incomprehension and loss which I felt on Thursday night last on being told of the tragic and untimely passing of "Dixie", as we all knew him? However to the members of this organisation, to the members of the many other bodies in the town, to which he belonged, and to the many whom he befriended and helped in some way there was no need to describe the feeling for it was one shared by all. One has to repeat uneuphemistically to one self that "Dixie is dead" and even then how would one accept that one would never see his face or benefit from his smile again.

There was scarcely a project run in Junior Chamber that he was not involved in. He was not the on who made the speeches nor was his name most prominent in newspaper reports, but he was the one who made the speeching and newspaper reporting possible. He was not on the council of the chapter, his voice was rarely heard at chapter meeting and yet if there was a job to be done Dixie Fairbrother was the man to do it. His word was most definitely his bond and the loyalty which so many people had to him vindicated this fact. Junior Chamber Roscrea's first project, after the Chapter was founded in 1976, was the cleaning of the "Mall River", Dixie worked tirelessly and enthusiastically at this venture. a few years later he was the motivating force behind Junior Chamber's Dawn Patrol when most people were in their beds in the early hours of Sunday mornings Dixie and those he had organised to help him were removing the litter from the streets.

There is scarcely anyone in Roscrea who does not remember "The Roscrea Radio". This very successful project was made possible in no small way through his efforts and hard work.

It was in the last six months, however, when I had primary responsibility for the chapter that I saw at close hand the very fine qualities and enormous energies of this great man. He had a very great concern for the old, the lonely, the handicapped and the underprivileged. He dearly loved the town he lived In and its people A few weeks ago he visited the County Home in Thurles armed with eight bottles of lucozade and visited every person there from Roscrea and the surrounding area . He asked each one he visited as to whether or not they liked being there and without exception all said they would prefer to be In their own town if that were possible. He wondered why people who had lived a hard life in more difficult times could not end their days in happiness in their own town among the people they knew. The week before he died he was sitting in my car outside his house when a neighbour came over to him and thanked him for having cleaned her husband's grave a few weeks beforehand. She had just discovered that it was he who did so, and that he had done the same for a number of others.

This was typical of Dixie's big heart. There were many other acts of kindnesses that will never be known.

At this year's St Patrick's Day Parade he was not on the review stand to review the parade but he was there in the small hours of that morning to erect it, It was he who organised the parade on the day, arranged the route, put floats and bands in their places and organise the stewarding.
It was he who organised Roscrea's first ever "Milk Run" which was a huge success and collected in the region of ¹1,500 for the Irish Wheelchair Association. He was the Project Leader in the organisation of the Sports for All Day In the Roscrea.
It was he who was primarily responsible for the successful organisation of a church gate collection a few months ago in aid of the Third World which realised In the region ¹450
He had a special admiration for the work and dedication of the Sisters and staff of St Anne's. He was a member of the "Friends of St Anne's and In his own unassuming way did much to contribute to the continuation of this very worthy work. Dixie Ensured that the Junior Chamber organisation were more aware of St Anne's and the work which they did.

Personally I am indebted to him for introducing me to the wonderful people there and I will always remember a few very enjoyable evenings we spent there together. It was through him that Junior Chamber had the privilege of being associated with a special indoor sports In Glasnevin by sponsoring bus from St Anne's and also with the All-Ireland Special Olympics In Thomond College. Limerick, to which he arranged that we would sponsor a child participating there in. The project which he got most satisfaction from and perhaps the one which, is in the greatest tribute to his memory was his involvement in a sports recently held In St Anne's for those children who were relatively more severely more severely handicapped. The children taking part in this sports never before took part in competitive events. He organised the purchasing of approx . 60 medals, spent considerable time in fixing the emblems to the centre of them, placed ribbons on each, and presented them to the children taking part on the day of the sports. Each medal recognised the worth and value of a child's effort, a child who had never been asked to compete before, and a child who had never been presented with a medal for anything before.
The last project he took part in, in Junior Chamber was the recent Ireland '81 Industrial Exhibition Here. Here he was to be seen each night when the exhibition had closed arranging or re-arranging something to ensure that things were more presentable for the following day. He spent the complete day following the exhibition in the Abbey Hall helping participants dismantle their stands and cleaning the hall.

Before his death if one were to ask for a personification of Junior Chamber Roscrea one could justifiably point towards Dixie Fairbrother. He contributed enormously to the organisation and was deeply committed to it as indeed was he to every organisation he was involved In. These included fee Roscrea Credit Union, Fianna Fail Cumann, Killavllla Soccer Club of which he was Chairman, and many other. His loss will be difficult to bear but we are grateful to God for his life and grateful that we were privileged to share it to an extent. to all those of us who knew him his memory will be forever a source of inspiration.

To his wife Eleanor, sons Noel and Scott; daughters Donna and Stacey; his mother, brothers, and sisters Kathleen, who is a former President of this Chapter, we offer our sincerest sympathy.

May Dixie enjoy the peace and happiness of the eternal reward.
FAIRBROTHER, Richard (Dixie) (I3416)

Shop celebrated the 100 aniversary in 2003

I met David and his son Fergus at Perth Airport today 22 Jan 2011, they been in Perth in holiday and had been up to Geraldton to visit Thomas. Fergus came to to the Tax Refund counter and I noticed the Cork address on some paperwork he had. I then established that we were related when David mentioned that he was from Fairhill and had lived in a house up there on its own. I said was your Dad a Barber and are you a Barber, he said "yes" and then I said "well then we are related" I opened up the family tree on the computer and showed them both on it! We had a little chat and marvelled at the fact that we had met up in such unlikely circumstances.
Fergus said he was working in Tel Aviv and I think he said his brother was their too. He took a photo of the two of us, David and I. Matt Falvey 22 Jan 2011
