Man Drowns after falling from surfboard into sea

by Eddie Cassidy

TRAGEDY has returned to a Blue Flag beach centre manned by life-guards.

A 58-year-old man drowned after he fell from a surfboard on Sunday evening at a West Cork beach.

Lifeguards who hauled him from the water made desperate efforts to resuscitate the man.

But John Harrington, a married man from 7, Ashdene, South Douglas Road, was dead on admission, by ambulance, to Mount Carmel Hospital in Clonakilty.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. at Ownahincha beach, near Rosscarbery. Three lifeguards went to the aid of Mr Harrington after he had got into difficulty within view of the crowded beach.

He had, reportedly, been a day-tripper to the beach centre.

Gardai in Clonakilty observed: "The beach is noted for its strong undercurrents and it has
claimed a number of live in the past."

According to gardai, a large number of people a were on the beach at the time.

The National Water Safety Council had, in recent times, erected warning signs about undercurrents, on neighbouring beaches at The Warren and the Long Strand.

The beach centre is a popular retreat for Cork city families.

My Dad (Thomas Falvey 1928-1995) used to visit his two Uncles, James' sons, in Douglas as they used to give him a couple of pence per visit. His story of these visits told to me when I was a boy, came to mind towards the end of my research and I had a look at Falvey's in Douglas and there was only one family there. Within a couple of hours I managed to trace them back to Blarney Street on the North Side of the City and to establish and confirm the link between their branch James born 17 Oct 1829 and my branch his Brother of Denis born 21 May 1826 both children of John Falvey born 15 Oct 1778 and Mary Ahern. What I did find particularly interesting was the accuracy of the story and the amount of it that could be corroborated as my father seemed to have an allergy to telling the truth. Dad said he used to visit 2 Uncles in Douglas, he was born in 1928 so would have had to have been 8+ before he would have started to head over there alone, I presume he would have gone alone as that way he wouldn't have to share the pennies with anyone else), that would have been about 1932 on. Margaret Falvey was working in the Mill and accounts from people that new the family say that Tom worked as a Head Mason and the others did not really work much at all. Denny did a little cooking and Timmy never really worked. So conceivably when Dad went over their the only two likely to be at home were Denny and Timmy. - Matt Falvey Jan 2010.

Hi Matt,
I just got some information for you but not much.
Frank Downey aged 80 next birthday still lives in Douglas West and is wheelchair bound.
He knew Tim and Tom Falvey and Maggie Falvey, a weaver, possibly a sister.
Mrs O'Brien- Maggie Halloran lived next door to Frank it may have been
no 7 or 12 (The numbers of the houses have changes). She was a great neighbour.
The Falvey's were her uncles and she looked after them in their old age.
Maggie's son was John O'Brien.
Maggie went to live in Grange Park. She died and her husband Paddy died.

Pat McSweeney is the caretaker of the graveyard nest to St' Columba's Church and he can be contacted at Marian Terrace ( no number given) Grange Road. some books relating to the graveyard are still in existence.
Not much there . I've take some photos and I'll try and attach the to the email. I having a bit of trouble sending them.
Thankfully I was not effected by the floods but at the moment we are in the grip of a freeze and it's hard to get about.
All the best for now and have a Happy New Year,

Olive Coleman

On 1901 census Edward Hornibrook, Head of family, Church of Ireland, could read and write, Aged 38, Labourer, Married, born Co CorkThey were living in 2 Dean St. behind St Finbarr's Cathedral when the 1901 Census was taken, So all the children up to and including Annie (1900) would have been born on the South side. Not sure when the move came to go to the Northside but by 1911 they were living there.

The house is listed as being a 1st Class house as it had 13 or more rooms, and had six windows in the front of the house. It housed five families with the Hornibrooks having 3 rooms.

1901 Census of Ireland, 2 Dean St.
Edward Hornibrook, Head, C of I, R&W, Age 38, Labourer, married, born Co Cork
Teresa Hornibrook, Wife, C of I, R&W, Age 34, H keeper, married, born Cork City
Ellen Hornibrook, Daughter, C of I, R&W, Age 13, Scholar, not married, born Cork City.
William Hornibrook, Son, C of I, R&W, Age 11, Scholar, not married, born Cork City.
Teresa Hornibrook, Daughter, C of I, R&W, Age 9, Scholar, not married, born Cork City.
James Hornibrook, Son, C of I, Read, Age 7, Scholar, not married, born Cork City.

David Hornibrook, Son, C of I, Cannot Read, Age 3, not married, born Co Cork.
Annie Hornibrook, Daughter, C of I, Cannot Read, Age 1, not married, born Cork City.

Have checked the 1901 film numbers 0815084 covers Dean St this is listed on the top LHS corner of the copy from Eileen of the Census. I checked the 1901 street index at the LDS and this has Dean st as mentioned and the other Deane St by the Bus Station has a different Film no so is thus ruled out.

Because of this all of the children up and including Annie where not born on the Northside and most probably were born in Dean St.

Ned had about 10 brothers some of whom went to Australia Cousin Freddie Hornibrook, (Freddie was Tessie's, Uncle John's son) contacted the family a few years ago with the link and Tessie also mentioned that there are Hornibrooks in Perth WA who are builders and descendants of the family.

One of these a daughter called Virginia married a Tim Bell in England who was subsequently made a Sir by Margaret Thatcher. Then a Lord Tim Bell by Prime Minister Tony Blair.
His name was Tim Bell who became Sir Tim Bell and Is now Lord Tim Bell. Margaret Thatcher was a fairly recent Prime Minister of ours and this marriage took place in a fashionable part of London where they are presumably still living.

Lord Bell, aged 61, Chairman Chime Communications. www.chime.plc.uk

Tim Bell is one of the best known figures in the United Kingdom communications industry. He helped found Saatchi & Saatchi in 1970, and as International Chairman he took Saatchi & Saatchi into its position as the first British number one worldwide advertising agency in 1981. He successfully ran the publicity campaigns for the Conservative Party for the general elections in 1979, 1983 and 1987. He was appointed deputy Chairman of Lowe Howard-Spink & Bell plc in 1985 and remained in that position until the formation of Chime Communications in 1989. He advises the chairmen of many of Britain's leading companies and organisations, as well as foreign heads of state and international business leaders and politicians. He was awarded a knighthood in 1990 by Lady Thatcher in her resignation honours and a Peerage by Tony Blair.

MASON'S SAD DEATH

INQUEST IN CORK.

Mr. Coroner William Murphy, solr.. attended at the South Infirmary at four o'clock yesterday afternoon, and held an inquest on the body of a mason named Denis Falvey. who lately resided at 11 North Abbey, and who died in the institution on the previous afternoon.

Evidence of identification and the fact that deceased was 26 years of age having been tendered by Mrs. Lizzie Falvey, wife of the deceased man.

Thomas Falvey, a brother of deceased, residing at 3 Farren street, and also a mason and Cornelius Sullivan, Blarney street, gave Evidence to the effect that deceased was employed in connection with the new railways. He came to his work near the Bandon Railway premises on the previous day, but about ten o'clock he was seized with a fit. Assistance was promptly rendered, and he was quickly removed to the South Infirmary.

Dr. Shanahan, House Surgeon at the institution, stated that deceased was admitted to the institution in an unconscious condition. Every thing that was possible was done for him, but he lingered on until he died about four o'clock in the afternoon. Death in his opinion resulted from haemorrhage into the brain, and was due to natural causes.

A verdict in accordance with the medical testimony was returned.

(Thomas Falvey would have been Denis' uncle.)
